As companies and organisations continue to find ways to cut their energy consumption and increase the efficiency of their electrical systems, Canary Wharf has become the latest high profile example of a site receiving a major lighting upgrade, which earlier this year featured a significant LED retrofit to its existing lighting systems.
September 2015 marked the completion of a long running project whereby Canary Wharf Group has installed some 9260 LED bulbs across its property portfolio, covering Canada Place, Jubilee Place and Cabot Place with sustainable, energy efficient light fittings.
Canary Wharf represents the workplace of over 112’000 people every day, with facilities that are visited by a further 100’000 people on the weekends, making it one of the most densely crowded parts of London. The new LED lights will provide better efficiency and a lower heat output, and are also designed to enhance many of Canary Wharf’s architectural features.
Growth and trends within the lighting industry itself certainly point towards a move to replace existing lighting mounts (using conventional technology) with more efficient solutions that save energy and reduce costs long term. As the variety of applications for LED lighting continues to grow and expand, it is likely that LED systems will also see their potential fulfilled in locations around the globe, and on a scale similar to the one pursued in Canary Wharf.
The upgrade is expected to have a massive impact on the way that Canary Wharf functions, saving over £400’000 annually and reducing the emission of CO₂ by some 1,951 tons. Many of the statistics of the project associated with the project are simply staggering in scope, (for example, the project required the replacement of an additional 5.3 kilometres of strip lighting) and it is hoped that by making the switch to LED lighting now Canary Wharf can hope to become sustainable well into the future.
